This case was one of the drug-related cases in 2023 where Simon and the entire team dedicated their best efforts.
The client had ordered cannabis online from overseas multiple times, with a total of about 10 orders, albeit in small quantities. This led to an investigation for importing cannabis. The first-instance court found that the quantity and frequency of the imports were significant and sentenced the client to imprisonment.
However, Simon did not give up and immediately filed an appeal. During the appellate trial, Simon discovered that, although there were 10 imports, the client had actually placed only 5 separate orders. Additionally, he argued strongly that while the total weight of the imported goods was substantial, they consisted mostly of candy, jelly, and other items with a low actual cannabis content.
The appellate court accepted these arguments, overturned the original decision, and sentenced the client to a suspended sentence. The client was immediately released and safely returned to his home country.
